Twist pile
This popular pile has twist yarn to give it a rougher surface which is hard-wearing and less prone to shown marks and scuffs.
Velvet (or Velour)
A close cut, short pile which feels smooth. Mainly used in tufted and Wilton constructions.
Saxony
A shag pile but shorter and with more dense construction for a soft feel.
Loop pile
Mainly available in natural and Berber flecked colours - durable, often with a harder feel.
Shag pile
Luxury, deep, soft feel - but less practical.
